If you’ve gone to Cedar Key, you’ve driven by Rosewood

In January 1923, a white mob burned the entire Black community of Rosewood, Florida to the ground. 🔥

It started with a false accusation. Within days, at least six Black residents were confirmed dead, though survivors put the number far higher. Every home, every church, every business in Rosewood was destroyed. The survivors fled into the swamps and never came back.

For decades, the state of Florida said nothing. No investigation. No charges. No acknowledgment. The land was quietly absorbed. Rosewood disappeared from maps, from textbooks, and from the official record.

It wasn't until 1994, more than 70 years later, that Florida became the first state in the nation to compensate survivors of a racial massacre, awarding $2.1 million to nine survivors and their descendants. The legislation passed only after survivors testified before the Florida Legislature in person.

The town is gone. The site is a clearing in the woods off State Road 24 in Levy County. Most people drive past it without knowing what happened there.

In 1843, a hurricane erased one of Florida's most important ports in a single night. 🌊

Port Leon sat at the mouth of the St. Marks River on Florida's Gulf Coast. It was a thriving commercial hub, the primary export point for Middle Florida's cotton economy, and one of the most active ports in the entire territory. Ships from New Orleans, New York, and Havana docked here regularly. It had warehouses, a customs house, hotels, and hundreds of residents.

On September 13, 1843, a powerful hurricane made landfall directly over the settlement. The storm surge was catastrophic. Port Leon was not damaged. It was obliterated. The entire town was swept into the Gulf. What little remained was abandoned on the spot.

The survivors relocated a few miles north and founded Newport, Florida. Port Leon was never rebuilt. Today, the site is a quiet stretch of marsh and mudflat on the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge. A few submerged pilings and scattered brick fragments are all that remain of a port that once moved Florida's entire cotton economy.

Florida has been erasing its own history since before it was even a state. Follow Florida Unfiltered for more stories they don't put on the historical markers.
