On the morning of October 15, 1954, Hazel came ashore near the North Carolina and South Carolina line at the worst possible moment. ⛈️

It was a Category 4, and it made landfall at the highest lunar tide of the year. The storm surge ran eighteen feet in places. At Long Beach, of the 357 buildings standing the day before, five were left habitable. Garden City, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle, Wrightsville, all of it took the same hit. The eye passed over and kept going, still strong enough to kill people in Toronto that night.

Nineteen people died in North Carolina. Hundreds were hurt. But what people who lived through it tend to describe is not the wind, it is the after: the sand piled where the road used to be, the pilings standing in rows with nothing on them, somebody's kitchen chair sitting upright in a marsh two miles inland. 🌊

Hazel rewrote the building codes and it rewrote the coastline. A lot of what the Brunswick County beaches look like today is a direct answer to what happened that one October morning.
