East Bay Permanent Real Estate Cooperative Organizing our community to take land off of the speculative market for good.

The East Bay Permanent Real Estate Cooperative (EB PREC) was birthed out of a collaboration between the Sustainable Economies Law Center and the People of Color Sustainable Housing Network. The PREC is a new model that provides a mechanism for organizing and mobilizing community capital for the acquisition and management of real estate. Our mission is to develop a, cooperative, affordable real estate ownership alternative that empowers local communities to maintain and strengthen their economic and cultural diversity. Our movement is People Of Color (POC)-centered with a focus on creating racial and economic equity.

EB PREC got a nice shout out in Angie Kim's (President & CEO of Center for Cultural Innovation) latest piece in Nonprofit Quarterly. Angie encourages us to think beyond get-out-the-vote campaigns and election cycles and begin making long-term investments in communities that practice small-d "democracy."

Since 2020, the funding push for Black-led groups has quietly been abandoned. Angie's playbook: ask communities what they need, go beyond 501(c)(3)s, and fund without restriction — backing the collectives (like EB PREC!) and land trusts that are actually accountable to the people they serve. 💛

Meet our Museum Research Fellows!

Last summer, we embarked on the development of the 7th Street Museum to hold the corridor’s rich history and help realize Esther's (from Esther’s Orbit Room) greatest ambition: "to see West Oakland come back like it was before."

We’re excited to welcome Naima, Bleu, and Ellena as our first Research Fellowship Cohort. Together, they’ll work to uncover and collect stories about 7th Street across generations which will be presented at the Barn (the historic 7th Street restaurant, EB PREC’s new headquarters, and the future site of the museum). The 7th Street Museum is also one of the projects EB PREC is currently fundraising to support as part of our ongoing Capital Campaign (visit ebprec.org/invest to learn more)!

Things are picking up on 7th Street so we’re relocating our headquarters to the Barn in West Oakland to support our ongoing activities.
