The "Hidden" Shut-Off Valve Check

Do you know exactly where your main water shut-off valve is? More importantly, will it actually turn if a pipe bursts?

The Problem: Main water valves sit untouched for years. When a plumbing emergency happens, homeowners run to turn them off, only to find the valve is completely seized up or rusted shut.

The Fix: Locate your main water shut-off today (usually where the water line enters the house, near the water meter or water heater).

Give it a turn to ensure it moves smoothly. If it's frozen, call a plumber to replace it before you actually need it in a panic.

❄️/🔥 Tip: Check Your Attic Breezeways

If your home is costing a fortune to heat or cool, the issue might not be your furnace—it could be your attic's ventilation.

The Problem: When insulation is blown into an attic, it frequently covers the soffit vents (the vents underneath your roof overhang). This suffocates the attic, trapping blistering heat in the summer and moisture in the winter, which can lead to mold and premature shingle rot.

The Fix: Next time you look in the attic, ensure your insulation isn't packed tight against the roof edges. You should see clear space or plastic "baffles" (breezeways) allowing fresh air to flow up from the soffits. A breathing attic is a healthy house!

Home owner tip:

Most homeowners know they need to clean their gutters, but they completely overlook where that water actually goes.

The Problem: Short downspout extensions drop thousands of gallons of rainwater right next to your foundation. Over time, this saturates the soil, causes it to expand or erode, and leads to cracked foundation walls, bowing, and wet basements or crawlspaces.

The Fix: Ensure your downspout extensions carry water at least 6 feet away from the foundation wall, dumping it onto a downward slope. Spending $15 on an extension piece today can save you $10,000+ in foundation repairs down the road.
