Lyme Home Watch of Lyme, Connecticut, has earned accreditation from the NHWA for the second year.

Owner Bill Hurtle has lived in Lyme since 2013. He is a federal civil servant nearing retirement. For the last 18 years, Bill worked as a microbiologist for the Department of Homeland Security. Prior to that, he was employed by the Department of the Army and at the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Frederick, Maryland.

Bill has a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in biomedical science from Hood College.

Over the years, Bill has observed friends and family head south for the winter, leaving their home unoccupied or having a non-professional “home watcher” monitor their property. They usually spend much of their time away wondering if their home is being adequately watched. Bill is there to take the worry out while his clients are away by providing a consistent, dependable service that one may not receive from a relative or neighbor who is busy with other things.
Home Watch services for the exterior and interior of a home are Lyme Home Watch’s primary mission. They also provide pre- and post-storm checks, facilitate contractor and vendor meetings, and offer keyholder services to their Home Watch clients.

Bill is a graduate of the NHWA’s Home Watch Boot Camp and has earned the designation of Certified Home Watch Professional, which places him among the elite Home Watch providers in the industry. The CHWP designation and Boot Camp training exemplify Bill’s commitment to Home Watch excellence.

Lyme is where Bill met his wife, Jennifer Tiffany. Together they run a cut-flower operation and the Farmer’s Market at Tiffany Farms. From June to October, they sell their flowers at the market. Bill and Jennifer have been together for ten years; Bill has two stepchildren, Jesse and Lisa, and two step-grandchildren, Ace and Dash.

Home watch goes by many names including house watch, house check, home concierge, caretaker, absentee home service, property watch, and the list goes on. Whatever you call it, a home watch service performs scheduled inspections of unoccupied or vacant properties while the owner is away. The National Home Watch Association describes home watch as “a visual inspection of a home or property, looking for obvious issues.”

Inspections include a basic check of plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems, as well as the overall condition of the home and property. Inspections are tailored to meet the specific needs of the owner. Home watch inspectors look at the house with a trained eye, making sure that everything is satisfactory. They look for leaks, pests and mold, all of which can be present in homes left alone for even the shortest interval.

Should the inspector find an issue or potential problem, they will immediately notify the homeowner. From there, the homeowner will instruct the home watch service as to how they want to proceed. By removing junk mail and flyers and creating a presence in the home, home watch adds a level of security to the unoccupied home. Home watch is the line of communication to the homeowner that provides peace of mind during their absence.
