Where should smoke detectors and Carbon monoxide detectors be located? The answers listed below depend on the city or municipality where the property is located; below is a list for smoke detector placement:

Every level: Install at least one on every level of the home, including the basement & attic.

Inside every bedroom: Place one inside each bedroom to alert occupants in case of fire.

Outside sleeping areas: Place one in the hallway or other common area directly outside the bedrooms.

Location within a room: Mount on the ceiling or high on a wall, no more than 12 inches from the ceiling. Avoid placing it in the corner of the room.

Keep away from heat sources: Keep detectors at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances like stoves and ovens to prevent false alarms.

Carbon monoxide (CO) detector placement:

Every level: Place one on every level of your home.

Near bedrooms: Position a detector in the hallway outside of bedrooms, as CO leaks can happen at night.

Height: Install on a wall about five feet off the floor or on the ceiling.

Acoustic reach: Ensure the alarm is loud enough to wake you and family members.

Avoid: Do not place within 15 feet of a fuel-burning appliance like a furnace or stove, or in a garage or kitchen. Avoid bathrooms and other humid areas.

Important tips for smoke & carbon monoxide detectors:

Follow manufacturer's instructions: Always check and follow the specific instructions for your device.

Interconnect alarms: Consider an interconnected alarm system so if one alarm goes off, they all sound.

Test regularly: Test your alarms monthly to ensure they are working properly.

More tips to get your home 'Winter Ready':
6. In wood burning fireplaces, creosote buildup from burning wood can cause fire hazards inside the chimney if it's not cleaned - have your fireplace cleaned if it's frequently used.

7. Keep driveways and sidewalks clear of debris.

8. If snow should fall, avoid shoveling or blowing snow against the foundation of the home as it could lead to foundation issues.

9. Inspect your roof for damaged shingles, deteriorating flashing, or debris.

10. Have overhanging tree branches cut back to prevent damage to the roof, shingles, or gutters.

11/10/2025

Below is a partial list of things, per FEMA, you can / should do to get your home 'winter ready':

1. Make sure the gutters and downspouts have been cleared of any leaves or debris.

2. Drain the water from outdoor garden hoses. Disconnect hoses from faucets. Cover the faucets and store the hoses.

3. Keep interior water pipes from freezing by wrapping them in heat tape and insulating them with foam insulation.

4. Install and maintain battery powered or battery back-up carbon monoxide detectors & smoke alarms. Carbon Monoxide detectors should be installed on each floor and smoke detectors installed in each bedroom.
Note: Carbon monoxide incidents are more common during colder months; these incidents commonly occur between the months of November and February. This is likely due to usage of furnaces, boilers, portable heaters, and generators in the colder months.

5. Have your furnace of boiler serviced and cleaned every year by a qualified professional. Make the following repairs as needed.
* Clean furnace filters once per month or as recommended.
* Keep anything that can burn at least 3 ft from all heat sources.
* Ensure vents are clean and not obstructed.

Check back for additional 'winter ready' tips.

Even though the country is in a lockdown mode due to the Coronavirus, below is a list of just a few 'Techy" projects you can perform during the lockdown:

1. ORGANIZE YOUR PHOTOS - now is a fine time to look through your photo collection, make sure it’s properly backed up, and maybe even create some albums that you can share or print. If you have an iPhone and are tired of paying for iCloud storage, you can move your images over to Google Photos for free.

2. BACK UP YOUR DOCUMENTS
As long as you’re backing up photos, you might as well create a backup system for your documents as well, preferably one that doesn’t involve manual copying and pasting to an external drive.

3. PROTECT YOUR PASSWORDS
It’s easy to say that you should use a password manager—and we often do—but the reality is that programs like LastPass and Dashlane take some time to set up and learn. You’ll need to get in the habit of saving credentials to your password manager for every site you log into, and you’ll want to go through your password list to replace weak passwords with stronger, randomly generated ones.

4. STRAIGHTEN UP YOUR EMAIL
We sometimes realize that we lose track of too many important emails. Go through the past few weeks of emails, address all the important ones, and archived everything else.
Of course, that’s not the only way to organize an inbox. You can also set up folders based on deadlines, rethink the way you triage emails in the first place, or turn your Gmail into a Trello-style to-do list.

5. CREATE A SYSTEM FOR NOTES AND LISTS
No disrespect to paper, but if your notes and to-do lists are a mishmash of paper planners and disparate smartphone apps, it might be time to reorganize.

6. REPURPOSE OLD TECH
Have an old phone or tablet stashed in a drawer somewhere? Try giving it new life as a single-use device. Example: Keep an old tablet permanently plugged in at your desk as a second monitor, using either Apple’s Sidecar feature (for iPads and Macs) or Duet Display (with any other device combination). You could also turn an old phone into a Chromecast remote.

***** These are suggestions only, if you' are computer or technically challenged, seek wise counsel before starting any project listed above.
