Church Street Station, which used to go by "Atlantic Coast Line Depot," used to only run between Downtown Orlando and Sanford. In 1880, Henry Sanford and Ulysses S. Grant broke ground on the station!

In the 1970's, the station had been mostly abandoned, but was still considered a piece of Orlando history, seeing as it was attributed to the primary reason for Orlando's population boom.

Now, the station has since been fully restored to its former glory, and frequently holds events for train enthusiasts and the like!

Long before the swans, the fountains, the Ting, the paddleboats, the beautiful rainbow amphitheater, the center of what is now Downtown Orlando had a massive sinkhole that eventually filled up with storm water! At the time, it was named "Sandy Beach," and was owned by Jacob Summerlin.

Later on, the Summerlin family donated a large strip of their land, including the lake, to the recently incorporated city of Orlando, which at the time had a whopping 58 residents.

Shortly before this photo was taken, Lake Eola was officially recognized as a public park!

Did you know that the city of Orlando was once part of the Seminole territory? Before Florida became a state, several indigenous groups came together to form an alliance that would be known as the Seminole Tribe. The group even included escaped African American slaves, and later emancipated slaves.

It wasn't until the Seminole Wars between the tribe and the United States that the groups were driven further south to the Everglades. Today, we celebrate the Seminole heritage and acknowledge the wrongdoings of the United States.

Included in the Seminole alliance were the Ais people, whose territory included Cape Canaveral and Indian River. Although today we know the region for its delicious citrus and summer fruits, we must never forget the rich cultural history that came before.

You can learn more about Central Florida's indigenous groups at the Orange County History Museum in Downtown Orlando!
