A Palm Coast dog trainer already charged in the deaths of two dogs is now facing a second animal cruelty case in Flagler County, this one over a client’s 9-month-old Great Dane.

Alexia Barquet was arrested in July after police found two Labrador retrievers dead inside a storage unit she was renting on the same block as her training business. That case is still pending in circuit court.

Back in July, HomeFetch told the story of Journey, a 9-year-old dog who had spent nearly five years at S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue. This week, that story came full circle: Journey has finally found her forever home, and we’re so proud to share that our coverage helped make it possible.

Journey’s story is the kind that wouldn't normally make the news. A senior dog waiting quietly at a rescue isn’t "breaking news," and without a newsroom dedicated to covering this beat, her story might never have been told.

And her adoption points to something bigger: Local news has long treated dogs as an occasional feel-good segment or a quick story when something goes wrong, while the issues that shape their lives rarely get steady attention. Putnam County deputies seized 11 dogs from a Palatka home and arrested a 67-year-old woman on a felony animal cruelty charge, according to an arrest affidavit.

The arrest came one month after deputies removed 36 dogs from another Putnam County home in a separate case.

He was arrested in August after the woman found videos on her phone and reported the case to deputies.

A Keystone Heights man is facing an animal cruelty charge after a neighbor heard his 15-week-old Great Dane puppy yelping and crying outside her home, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

What she saw when she checked her Ring camera led to his arrest, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. The man later told a detective he had gone “too far.”

A Volusia County woman refused to give up her dogs after deputies found them crated with no food or water, one in a crate with old, molded f***s matted into the wire floor.

The only bowl in the other dog's crate held hay, dog hair and plastic wrappers, according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office. In another room, eight cats were kept where the ammonia was so strong that responders began to cough and gag.

She was arrested on 10 animal cruelty charges and later released on $5,000 bond. Volusia County Animal Services removed the two dogs and eight cats from the home.

Ten animals were removed from a Volusia County home Monday, including two dogs crated with no food or water, deputies say. The other eight, all cats, were kept in a room where the ammonia was so strong that responders began to cough and gag.

The owner was arrested on 10 animal cruelty charges after a search warrant brought deputies and state wildlife officers to the home. Deputies say she refused to give up any of the animals.
