On our way into the old town of Lecce, Puglia to explore its vibrant history and remarkable architecture, my guide Lorenzo, who was born and raised here, pointed out something incredible.

The city’s iconic Baroque buildings are crafted from Lecce stone, a soft limestone formed from ancient seabeds thousands of years ago. Look closely and you can still see and touch the shells and marine fossils that once rested at the bottom of the Ionian Sea.

In Lecce, history isn’t just preserved, it’s built into the architecture itself.

Standing watch over Gaios Harbor, Paxos Island, is the Seafarer, a tribute to the generations of islanders whose lives were shaped by the sea. Just offshore, anchored in the harbor, is a replica of Aristotle Onassis’ legendary yacht, Christina O. The original hosted everyone from Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy to Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as it cruised the Mediterranean.

What a coincidence and how lucky to look up for a moment and get pulled into history. Surrounded by yachts anchored in the harbor, thinking about the sailors, shipping magnates, world leaders, movie stars, and travelers who have passed through these waters before us.

One of the things I love most about travel is that history is often hiding in plain sight.

Corfu, Greece was once ruled by Venice, Italy and walking through Old Town, you feel it everywhere.

The arcades, the pastel facades, the narrow lanes, the old fortresses… it has that unmistakable Italian influence, but with a Greek heartbeat.

That’s what makes Corfu so special. It doesn’t feel like just one place. It feels like centuries of history meeting at the edge of the Ionian Sea
