Just like our listing of gorgeous homes, the PSIFF is Now Showing!

The Palm Springs International Film Festival has earned its reputation as the first stop on the road to the Academy Awards®, with its Oscar®-qualifying ShortFest recognized as the largest short film festival and market in North America. The festival was founded in 1989 when Sonny Bono brought together industry leaders, major sponsors, and key members of the local community to turn a bold vision into reality.

What began as an ambitious idea quickly became a cornerstone of the international film festival circuit, here in our backyard.

The Surprising Origins of Black Friday

Before it meant doorbuster deals and holiday shopping, Black Friday had a darker past.

In the 1950s, Philadelphia police coined the term to describe the chaos after Thanksgiving dinner. Massive crowds, traffic jams, and shoplifters flooding the city before the Army-Navy game.

By the late 1980s, retailers rebranded it as a positive day, when stores went from being “in the red” to “in the black.”

Today, it might be a shopping tradition, but its history began with chaos, not shopping carts.
