Have you ever seen an American hazelnut? They form dense thickets, sprouting from rhizomes. They're not a particularly showy plant during the growing season but they put off a real nice fall color and produce quite a few nuts that are enjoyed by a variety of wildlife. I've never tried them, but people say the nut has a nice, sweet flavor.

If I can beat the critters to them this fall I'll harvest some and make a simple syrup for my wife's hazelnut lattes!

The timber burn we completed this spring was very successful!

Our main goals were reducing cedar encroachment and setting back the infestation of multiflora rose, both of which will allow for a more diverse timber stand.

Public lands are an important part of our nation's legacy. They're great places to explore, even if you just have 5 minutes!

I was a little early for a property showing so I stopped off at an MDC conservation area that was just down the road from my destination. While I was there I saw a few different plants coming in to bloom, heard 4 different grassland bird species, and watched a very wet racoon scramble across the road after looking for a crawdad.

Public land can increase the value of neighboring properties by expanding the amount of recreational opportunities. Oftentimes a parcel located next to a piece of public land can "punch above its weight" when it comes to the amount and quality of wildlife it holds.

If your lawn looks more like a clover food plot than a golf course, we'd probably be friends.

Can anybody give me a good reason not to have clover in a lawn? It's a great addition to the yard, especially if you live in a rural area where you're free from the feeling to "keep up with the Joneses"!

It's low-growing, which leads to less mowing.

It adds a visual appeal, with white flowers and attractive leaves.

Wildlife love it! We've had deer, turkeys, and groundhogs visit our yard to help with the mowing.

It's pollinator-friendly.

Seems like a no-brainer to me!

If you're looking for a place to set up your homestead in Cass County, this piece is definitely worth checking out! At 31.14 +/- acres you'll find a diverse landscape that lends itself for a wide range of opportunities. The property is currently zoned as agricultural and is located just outside of the city limits of Raymore.

A creek with a rock bottom naturally creates 2 distinct areas. On the north side of the creek, the tree-lined driveway provides a secluded entrance to a park-like setting. The slightly sloped open area would be a great spot for a large garden, pasture, or small crop field. The wood lot serves as a great buffer zone from the street, creating further separation from the outside world. The south side offers rolling hills and open meadows with nice views. The terrain and distance from the road truly makes it feel like you're out on the farm!

Wildlife is abundant here, with deer and turkeys frequenting the property. There are quite a few walnut trees along the creek that, with some management, could produce some valuable logs in the future. Class II soils dominate the open portion of the north side of the creek. Two driveways offer access to both sides of the creek.
Less than a mile up the road, Raymore Recreational Park offers a wide range of outdoor activities. I-49 is just a few miles away; conveniently close but just far enough to feel off the beaten path.

Opportunities in this area are becoming fewer and further between, don't miss your chance!

The property is also being offered as a 10 acre parcel (see MLS #2591054)

Closing day!

The McDonalds asked me to help with the paperwork on the sale of their house to a friend. Everything went very smoothly, thanks in large part to the good work of Stewart Title in Plattsburg.

Give me a call if you'd like help navigating any part of the real estate buying or selling process!

If you're looking to implement more of Missouri's native plants into your landscape but don't where to start, this is a great resource for you!

Even small areas can be very beneficial, and starting small is a good way to learn as you go.

Grow Native! is proud to announce the launch of a new online resource, the Grow Native! Guide for Beginning Native Plant Gardeners.

The Beginner's Guide includes an introduction to native gardening in the lower Midwest with guided instructions for assessing your outdoor space, preparing your garden site, finding native plants, and installing and maintaining your new garden. The guide also features as an invitation to gardeners to explore native gardening goals, such as supporting pollinators and benefiting songbirds. To support each of those goals, the guide includes simple garden designs with a limited number of native plant species that are suitable for beginners.

Developed primarily by MPF's Director of Operations, Emily Gustafson, the Beginner's Guide was inspired in part by her own reflections on learning to garden with native plants.
