Here’s an overview of Florida’s My Safe Florida Home Program, which provides grants of up to $10,000 to qualifying homeowners for hurricane preparedness upgrades:
⸻
🏠 Program Highlights
🛠 Purpose & Value
• Offers matching grants to eligible Florida homeowners to complete wind-mitigation improvements—such as impact windows, strengthened doors, roof attachments, and water-resistant barriers. The state covers $2 for every $1 you spend, up to $10,000. Low‑income homeowners may qualify for the full grant with no match required.
📅 Funding & Timeline
• In the 2025–2026 state budget, $280 million has been appropriated for the program, a significant increase over the prior year’s $200 million.
👤 Who is Eligible?
• Home must be:
• An owner‑occupied, site-built single-family home or townhouse with a Florida homestead exemption.
• Insured value ≤ $700,000 (unless low-income). Building permit filed before January 1, 2008.
• Priority is given to:
• Seniors (60+ years old), low‑income households (up to 80% of county median income), and moderate-income seniors (up to 120% of county median).
📋 Application Steps
1. Request a free wind-mitigation inspection via the program portal at MySafeFLHome.com.
2. Once you receive your inspection report, apply for the grant—showing receipts after work is completed. Only recommended improvements listed in your report are eligible.
3. Low-income applicants do not have to contribute matching funds; others must pay one-third of project cost.
4. Must use a program-approved contractor and schedule final inspection before reimbursement is issued.
🔧 Covered Improvements
• Roof deck attachment strengthening (nailing, strapping)
• Roof-to-wall connectors (metal tie-down clips)
• Secondary Roof Water Barrier (SWR) such as peel-and-stick underlayment or seam tape
• Opening protection: impact-rated windows, exterior doors, or hurricane shutters
• Townhouses limited to opening protection only
⏳ Timeline & Documentation
• After grant approval, work must be completed and final inspection requested within one year (extensions may be possible). Each homeowner may receive only one grant.
• In March 2025, the program required all applicants who had completed inspections to submit a mandatory age and income survey through the portal to be placed in grant priority.
💡 Benefits Beyond Hardening
• Stronger homes may lead to wind mitigation insurance discounts, lowering premiums.
