Had an incredible experience this morning touring the newly opened Pennsylvania Hospital Museum at 8th & Spruce. Tucked inside the nation’s first hospital, founded in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond, this is one of the most fascinating hidden gems in Philadelphia. The museum is filled with centuries of medical history, including preserved surgical tools, handwritten patient journals, apothecary artifacts, and exhibits that trace the evolution of healthcare in colonial America. One of the highlights is the historic surgical amphitheater, where physicians once performed operations before modern anesthesia and antiseptic practices existed. Walking through the space made me think about how far medicine has come and gave me a real appreciation for Philadelphia’s role in shaping medical education and innovation over the years.
One of my favorite parts about living in Philly is that there’s always something new to discover beyond the usual tourist spots. Whether it’s historic museums, neighborhood coffee shops, quiet streets with incredible architecture, or places you’d walk right past without realizing their significance, this city is packed with character if you know where to look. Exploring places like this is a reminder that Philly’s history runs much deeper than the mainstream highlights, and places like this hospital help tell the story of how our city influenced medicine, science, and public health across the country 🏙️🩺
