A Thanksgiving Story

I have been thinking about whether I should talk about this, but after a few weeks of reflection, I realize how important this is to me. On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, I received a phone call around 8:30pm. Always suspicious of phone calls from numbers I do not recognize, I let it ring four times before I finally answered – it just “looked legitimate.” It was from the Red Cross.

I have always been a blood donor since I was a teenager. The man on the other end thanked me for my previous donations (told me I had donated almost eleven gallons) and asked if I would be available to donate by the end of the day on Friday – the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday. He told me there was a child at CHOP who needed blood for a difficult procedure and would need blood transfusions.

He then proceeded to tell me why he was calling me in particular. This child had a special blood factor and could only accept blood from someone with the same factor. In the whole Philadelphia region there are only thirty-four blood donors (that the Red Cross had on record) that contained this factor. I was one of the last on the list (thank the letter “Z”) to be called, and they needed one more unit of blood for the child.

I immediately said yes and scheduled my donation for Friday morning at 8:30am. After working 30 years in the healthcare industry, of all the things I have done and accomplished, this is what I feel the best about! Friends, relatives, and partners’ lives are literally saved by blood donations.

If you are going to give anything this holiday season, give blood, whether a special donation, whole blood, or platelets!
