Scientists at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) have created a plasma transducer called the active “plasmacoustic metalayer” that can effectively reduce noise compared to traditional tools, as announced in a recent press release.
By ionizing a thin layer of air between electrodes, the charged air particles can quickly respond to electrical field commands and interact with sound vibrations to cancel them out.
This compact plasma absorber can absorb 100% of incoming sound intensity with a thin plasma layer, offering new possibilities for noise control in various applications.
EPFL has partnered with Sonexos SA to further develop this technology for use in automotive, consumer, commercial, and industrial sectors.
