Abington Township is considering whether to advertise an ordinance that would ban e-bikes and e-scooters from Township parks and trail systems.

But a blanket ban is the wrong tool.

Montgomery County already has a more targeted model: allow e-bikes in designated areas, require functional pedals, set a 750 watt motor limit, set a 100 lb weight limit, require yielding and audible warnings, and cap speeds at 15 mph.

Abington should revise its ordinance before advertising it.

The better approach: regulate speed, reckless riding, yielding, passing, and e-motos, while allowing lawful low-speed e-bikes where conventional bikes are allowed.

Abington residents: please attend the board meeting 7pm Thursday and/or email your Commissioner by July 9th.
