Heat wave, schmeat wave — here's what's actually cool this weekend.
Big Nights Out
Karol G — State Farm Stadium, Saturday, 7pm The Latin pop mega-concert of the summer. Demand is high, so if you want in, don't sleep on it.
Mount Westmore (Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E-40 & Too $hort) — Desert Diamond Arena, Friday, 8pm A legitimate hip-hop supergroup lineup in one arena, one night.
Lost 80's Live — Celebrity Theatre, Friday, 7:30pm Big Country, The Vapors, and Oingo Boingo going full retro. Bring the shoulder pads.
Candlelight: Tribute to TOOL — Phoenix Art Museum, Saturday, 6:30pm A string quartet reimagining prog rock, indoors, air conditioning included. Somehow it works.
Stage & Culture
Matilda — The Musical — Herberger Theater Center, Friday 7pm, Saturday 2pm & 7pm Musical theater, and — worth repeating — indoors.
Drunk Pirates — The Rose Theatre, Friday, two showtimes For when "normal Friday night" isn't cutting it.
Molly of Denali: An Alaskan Adventure — Heard Museum, through August 30 A genuinely cool exhibit, temperature included. Good one for the kids.
Sports
Phoenix Mercury vs. Toronto Tempo — Mortgage Matchup Center, Saturday, 7pm WNBA action, tickets from $13, and the arena is always freezing. Bring a hoodie.
RUF MMA 70 — Celebrity Theatre, Saturday, 7pm For when you want your Saturday night with a little more contact.
Classic Desert-Dweller Cool-Offs
City splash pads. Several are opening earlier in the day because of the heat — free, and toddler-approved.
Indoor staples. OdySea Aquarium, Arizona Science Center, or an ice-skating rink deal. All A/C, all reliable, all a Valley rite of passage by now.
Early hike, cold lunch. Beat the sun with a sunrise trail, then reward yourself with a cold patio lunch before it hits 100. Peak desert-dweller move!
