Houses built before the 1970's are likely to have cast iron drain piping. Other uncommon piping types used were clay, wood, and fiber conduit (Orangeburg). While cast iron is said to last anywhere from 50-100 years, it's always best to have a sewer scope inspection performed during the sale of any house built prior to the 1970's. This can determine the condition of the drainage system, while also checking for issues commonly found in older, cast iron piping. Such issues can be corrosion within the interior of the pipe, which can deteriorate the piping and allow for tree root intrusion.

As you can see here, there are several lapses in installation for this outdoor receptacle. Firstly, it is not GFCI protected to prevent hazardous shocks from "ground faults". Secondly, there is loose and unsupported conduit running to the receptacle. Lastly, it is missing a protective coverplate/weatherproof cover.

Something as subtle as a dryer vent screen can be a fire hazard. We recommend any dryer vent exhaust with a screen covering be removed, as these screens can cause lint to become trapped, clogging the screens and vents. Dryer lint is flammable, and a clogged vent will trap the hot exhaust air, increasing the possibility of a fire. Yearly cleaning of the dryer vent is recommended to ensure it is clean and free of excess lint buildup.

Did you know Earth-to-wood contact can allow easier access for subterranean termites to intrude into your home? Here, you can see a wood post along with a wooden staircase buried into the soil. All Earth-to-wood contact should be eliminated to prevent termite intrusion and moisture deterioration. This includes lifting posts/stair stringers above the soil and resting them on a concrete footing.
