DID YOU KNOW...Smoke detectors have a lifespan of 10 years from their manufacturing date???

Over time, their sensors become less sensitive and internal components can corrode or accumulate contaminants (i.e. dust, insects), reducing reliability and increasing fire risk.

For proper protection, smoke detectors should be removed from their mounts, the manufacturing date checked and replaced.

HOW TO CHECK THE DATE:

1. Remove the detector: Take the smoke alarm from its ceiling or wall mount.

2. Locate the manufacturing date: Look on the back or side of the unit for a label that indicates the date of manufacture.

3. For example, if it was manufactured in February 2018, it should be replaced in February 2028.

Ensuring the proper maintenance and timely replacement of smoke detectors is crucial for safety. By following the steps to check the manufacturing date and replacing units older than 10 years, you can help protect your home and loved ones from the risk of fire. Stay safe and proactive!

Fix-It Friday with Rosey….

To caulk or not to caulk, that is the question??

Caulking serves the primary purpose of sealing gaps and cracks in building materials to prevent air, water and pests from penetrating. Windows, doors, interior molding and cabinetry area all common areas that require caulk.

There are many different types of caulks available, it depends on your application. Some are thicker and some thinner.

The trick is making it look good!

This takes a little bit of practice, and with a few helpful tips your job will look like the pro’s:

1. Fold a piece of sandpaper in half, place the sandpaper in the corner of the wall, cut the tube of caulk on an angle, then run the tip in the groove of the sandpaper a couple of times to make the tip match the corner, then mark the top of the tip with a marker it will ensure you are lined up correctly.

2. The tool you always have with you – the good ole index finger. Wet the tip of your finger and glide over the caulk to smooth it out giving you a professional look.

3. Lastly, invest in a dripless caulk gun.

By following these steps and utilizing the right tools, you can achieve a professional and durable finish in your caulking projects.

Fix It Friday with Rosey…

When was the last time you cleaned your bathroom exhaust fan?

Your bathroom fan should last a long time if properly maintained, cleaning is simple and only takes a few minutes to do.

1. Turn off the power to the fan.
2. Remove the fan cover, pull down on the cover and you will see two wire tabs on each side squeeze wire tabs and remove
3. Soak the cover in warm soapy water for a few minutes, then scrub it with a cloth or brush.
4. Use a vacuum and paintbrush to loosen and suck away as much dust as you can.
5. Clean the fan blades and recessed housing with a cloth or brush and soapy water.
6. Allow everything to dry.
7. Replace the cover.
8. Repeat every three months.

There are two main types: self-cleaning filters that grind up food particles and manual filters that you need to clean regularly.

Knowing which type you have is key to keeping it in good shape.

Cleaning Steps and Frequency: To clean the filter, empty the dishwasher, remove the filter, wash it, and reinsert it. It is advisable to check the filter every month or every three to six months, depending on dishwasher usage.

By keeping your dishwasher filter clean, you not only ensure sparkling dishes but also extend the life and efficiency of your machine.

Microfiber Magic: The Ultimate Cleaning Companion

Microfibre is a synthetic fabric made of ultra-fine fibers that uses significantly less water and chemicals compared to cotton.

Microfiber cloths can absorb up to seven times their weight in water, making them ideal for cleaning spills and messes. They effectively clean surfaces like counters and stovetops by picking up dirt and food residue.

Microfiber cloths should only be washed in cold water to prevent damage.
