This framed piece was given to me by one of the CNAs on my Catholic Hospice team nearly two decades ago, and it remains one of my most prized possessions.
It supposedly describes the Hebrew meaning of “Beth” — beautiful, regal, in control. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the translation 😂, but the words “in control” have always stuck with me.
Maybe because life has a funny way of reminding us just how little control we actually have.
Life changes. Careers change. Plans change. Things happen that we never expected and certainly didn't choose.
What we can control is how we respond.
Recently, one of my favorite veterans at my local VFW brought tears to my eyes when he shared what he thought about how I've handled the changes in my career. It was unexpected and probably one of the greatest compliments I've ever received.
It made me think about something else, too.
I share a lot. My dad would probably say too much. 😂 But in the different roles I hold today — real estate, client and customer engagement, brand representation, community involvement — relationships are at the heart of everything I do.
And relationships require trust.
I don't believe trust comes from a title, a business card, a polished photo or the clothes we wear. People trust people.
So yes, I share my life. The wins, the pivots, the challenges, the things that make me laugh and sometimes the things that make me question what's next.
Because if I'm asking people to trust me with their home, their decisions, their business, their brand or simply their experience — I think it's important that they know the person they're trusting.
Maybe being “in control” isn't about controlling what happens to us.
Maybe it's about choosing who we are when it does.
