The Dangers of Not Securing Your Septic Tank Lid:

In addition to allowing access to your septic tank for repairs and maintenance, a septic tank lid provides security by preventing kids, animals, rainwater, and debris from entering your septic tank. It also keeps harmful gasses and bacteria from escaping, which can be hazardous to your health.

Over the years, there have been several instances where children have died due to falling into septic tanks. One report from Florida describes a horrible scene at a family birthday party where a child disappeared during the event and was found later inside the septic tank.

However, this doesn't just happen to children and small animals. More recently, a 74-year-old North Port resident was found dead in her septic tank after she fell in while she was gardening around her home.

The average septic tank is about 6 feet deep, which could easily cause serious injury. The fall alone is not all that can cause problems, though. One of the byproducts of sewage is methane gas which builds up in the chamber. High concentrations of methane in an enclosed space will decrease the oxygen levels in the area and can lead to suffocation. Methane gas is also highly flammable and can be ignited by something as innocuous as an ember from a cigarette!

Fall is the perfect season to check on your septic tank and finish up any inspections you may have been putting off. It’s also an important time of the year to perform preventive care so you won’t have to worry about any issues popping up during the cold winter months. Here is a maintenance to-do list you’ll need to complete this fall.

Tidy up around the tank:

While you’re out raking leaves, don’t forget to check around the septic tank. Make sure your tank access points are clear of leaves, twigs and other debris in case your tank needs to be serviced during the fall or winter. If debris falls into the tank, it could damage the pump or aerator.

Inspect before traveling:

If you typically travel during the winter or live in a seasonal home, it’s best to have a professional check your septic system in the fall. That way, you can ensure everything is working properly while you’re away for an extended period of time.

Check for leaks:

Take a look at the pipes inside and outside of the house, as well as your septic tank risers and lids, and fix any leaks. If not taken care of now, they could become frozen in the winter. Any freezing of this kind can cause cracking of the concrete and cause your septic system to develop a leak.

What Happens If You Fall in a Septic Tank:

• Immediate drowning risk – Septic tanks pose fatal drowning hazards due to deep liquid levels and difficulty climbing out
• Toxic gas exposure – Hydrogen sulfide and methane gases can cause unconsciousness within seconds
• Never attempt direct rescue – Call 911 immediate
ly and avoid entering the tank yourself
• Contamination dangers – Raw sewage exposure leads to serious infections and diseases
• Prevention is critical – Secure tank lids, regular inspections, and proper maintenance prevent accidents
• Children are most vulnerable – Multiple documented fatalities involve young children falling through damaged covers
• Professional help required – Emergency responders have specialized equipment for safe tank rescues
• Legal liability exists – Property owners face responsibility for maintaining secure septic systems

Create A Protective Barrier:

They don’t make septic-tank-sized sweaters, but they do make grass seed and mulch. Both grass and mulch can act as a form of insulation for your septic tank. As we move further into fall, let your grass that’s on top of your septic tank system grow taller; about 6 inches is good. The extra grass can help to keep your septic tank from freezing. Similarly, a thick layer of mulch can help your tank stay warm. You can put an 8-12 inch layer over the spot your tank is buried. Make sure you do this before the temperatures start to drop into the freezing range during the night, otherwise this is really too late to be of any use. If your system is already frozen, it’s best to keep the spot free of any debris or insulation, as it will have the opposite effect and make it harder to thaw out.

Check Your Septic Tank System for Any Damage:

A quick visual inspection of your septic system can help you identify any issues that may give you trouble during the colder months. The cover to your tank should be damage-free and easily spotted and accessed. Your cover should be level with the grade of the earth around it. Making sure that your tank and its related accessories are structurally sound is a safety measure. If you experience a septic tank freeze or other septic tank emergency, you’ll want to make sure that your tank will not hurt the technician working on it or cause them undue stress.

Fix the Leaks in Your Home:

If you’re being lulled to sleep every night by the steady tap tap tap of a leaking faucet, it’s time to get it addressed before the fall weather gets any colder. Dripping faucets and pipes can result in frozen pipes when the temperatures drop. You’ll want to make sure that your pipes are in good working order before they freeze. You’ll also want to make sure that nothing is leaking into your septic tank system or on top of its lid, as this can cause problems in your system, or freeze your tank lid shut.
