Go look at your peony clump this weekend; if it is herbaceous (dies to the ground each fall) and the pink-red buds called "eyes" are visible at the crown, this is the window to divide it.

Late September into early October gives new roots time to settle before the ground freezes, with the plant already dormant so it barely notices. Lift the whole clump with a spade, rinse the soil off so you can see the eyes, and cut it into sections with three to five eyes each and a good handful of root. Replant each piece one to two inches deep; too deep is the single most common reason a divided peony refuses to bloom for years.

Set expectations honestly: a divided peony usually gives you a thin bloom or none at all next spring while it re-establishes. That is normal, not a mistake.

Two exceptions worth saying out loud: a peony that already blooms well every year does not need this and is better left alone, and a tree peony (the woody kind that does not die back) is grafted and divided by an entirely different, riskier method; do not use this weekend's technique on one. 🌸
