🌊Important Water Safety Reminders
If the river is calling your name, and you plan on spending time on the water this summer, remember these important water safety reminders from Sacramento County Regional Parks.
• Wear a life vest, whether you are swimming, fishing, boating, floating or just wading. Even the best swimmers can be pulled under, and the law requires children under 13 to wear one. If you don’t have a life vest, you can borrow one from one of the borrowing stations throughout our region’s waterways or at your local fire station.
• Actively supervise children and pets—never leave them unattended.
• Learn how to swim, even if you’re wearing a life vest. Be sure to avoid deep water and watch out for hazards such as sharp rocks or debris.
• Never risk your life for personal property. If your equipment, phone or other items go downstream, never follow them—it’s not worth it.
• Wear sunscreen, and lookout for signs of hypothermia. If you or someone you’re with experiences severe shivering or fatigue, get out of the water immediately.
• Know how to help someone in trouble. Yell “help” to draw attention, and reach towards the person with a pole, branch or paddle, or throw them a life vest or cooler to help them keep afloat until help arrives.
