Bear Mountain Arborists finished trimming the beautiful plum tree at Plum Tree Cottage today, and doesn’t it look amazing? 🌸

This tree is actually what first caught my attention when I was looking to buy the property. It felt like the heart of the yard from the very beginning.

The buds are already forming, so spring is just around the corner. I’ll be sure to share photos once the blossoms start to appear!

Spring prep is about to start at PlumTreeCottageReno.com

This week the wonderful team from Bear Mountain Arborists will be stopping by to give my beautiful trees a much-needed trim. Since I only purchased the cottage last year, I’m not sure when they were last cared for, so it feels like the perfect time to give them a little attention.

I’ll be taking the day off work to spend some time in the yard myself—planting spring flowers and enjoying the fresh air. There’s something special about tending the garden and getting the cottage ready for a new season of guests.

Plum Tree Cottage is ready for Valentine’s Day!

When I bought the house, the previous owner had allowed cats to do what cats do under the deck. I did everything I could—repeatedly power-washing with scent neutralizer, sealing off access points, and even trying cat-away spray and chili powder (did you know that comes in 5-lb bags?). Nothing worked.

I eventually learned about Reno’s community cat program, where you can humanely trap a cat, have it spayed or neutered and vaccinated, and then return it to its community. The cats get a small ear tip so you know they’ve been through the program. That felt like the right thing to do.

Since they were sticking around, I started feeding them—if they were going to be my neighbors, I wanted them healthy. As fall turned into winter, I worried about them being cold, so I bought a heated outdoor cat house. Of course, I needed to know if they were actually using it… which led to buying a camera so I could check in on them.

Moral of the story: if you can’t beat them, you might as well host them. 🐾💛

🌿 The Story of Plum Tree Cottage 🌿

In February 2025, a little 1914 cottage kept popping up on my feed. The arches, the cozy kitchen nook, and the old plum tree instantly drew me in. When I visited the open house, I spotted what looked like hand-turned columns hidden in the mudroom—and I knew this home had potential.

During the renovation, uncovering those original columns became one of my favorite moments. Slowly, the cottage revealed its charm, and bringing it back to life has been such a rewarding project.

Today, Plum Tree Cottage is restored and ready for guests. I just want to take a moment to give a huge shoutout to my wonderful husband for his endless patience and support during the restoration of Plum Tree Cottage. While I was living there and working on all the details, he kept everything running smoothly at home and came over every weekend to help with all the heavy lifting. I truly couldn’t have done it without him!

Exciting News from Downtown Reno!

At the end of February, I took the plunge and purchased a charming 1914 cottage right here in downtown Reno. During the first half of 2025, I spent most days there working on restoring it in the evenings after my day job—bringing this beautiful old home back to life. With a little help from contractors for the big projects, it’s been an amazing journey. Stay tuned for some fun before-and-after photos in upcoming posts!
