Some of the way I run my business is not the standard, and I’ve made my peace with that.

Compo Beach, because it’s the last real weekend of summer.

Kayak the Saugatuck River with Sea Kayak Connecticut.

Dan Tressler Music on Church Lane in Downtown Westport for one more summer night outside.

What started as a simple idea to bring people together over coffee has become one of our favorite mornings of the month.

No agenda. No presentation. Just neighbors, friends, clients, local business owners and people we haven’t met yet showing up, having conversations and getting to know one another.

That’s what I love about this community.

The kitchen is fixable. The commute is not.

Comment START and I’ll help you understand the Westport fixer-upper opportunities that fit what you actually want.

Everything inside a house can be changed. Layout, finishes, the bathroom you hate, all of it is a line item. What you can never change is what’s outside the front door.

So when someone asks me where to buy something they’ll have to work on, I don’t start with the house. I start with the three Westport neighborhoods where the land is worth the work.

Old Hill. Mature trees, historic character and a tucked-away feel without being far from Downtown Westport. The homes here may be dated. The location never will be.

Downtown Westport. Shopping, restaurants and the Saugatuck River right outside your door. When the right property comes along here, improving the house can be worth it for a location that’s difficult to replicate.

Saugatuck. Convenience, coastal living and easy access to the train, restaurants and the river. It’s exactly why a house that needs work can still be worth a serious look.

If you’re moving to Westport, CT and open to buying something that needs work, this is where I’d have you looking. Same goes for Weston, Wilton and the rest of Fairfield County.

People assume you sell because something went wrong. Usually it’s the opposite. Life changed and the house didn’t.

Here’s what it actually sounds like when someone calls me:

They’re done maintaining thousands of square feet in Westport. What they want is a condo in Manhattan. Not less house. A different week. Museums on a Wednesday afternoon, dinner without planning it eight days out, the theater a few minutes from the lobby, and somebody else dealing with the roof.

They’re trading more winters here for a February in Naples. Outdoor dining, sunsets at the beach, and golf on a Tuesday.

The job moved across the country. A long commute disappears, and the same money may buy a very different life somewhere else.

They bought years ago and just found out what their Westport home is worth now. You can’t un-know that.

The taxes, the lawn service, the upkeep on thousands of square feet. It adds up to a lot of trips they’d rather be taking.

The people they’d cross town for now live a few states away, and they’re done with holidays that start in an airport.

None of that means you hate Westport. It means the house stopped fitting.
