This is a great photo. Nothing says “welcome to Montana” quite like an animal that looks like it should be calmly eating willow branches but can outrun you and make your day catastrophically memorable. Nature has an odd sense of humor.

Just because they’re beautiful doesn’t mean they’re friendly. 🫎

Moose are one of the most incredible animals you’ll see around Red Lodge and the Beartooth Mountains, but they’re also one of the most dangerous.

They can run up to 35 mph, kick in any direction, and yes… getting moose-slapped is a very real thing.

We learned that firsthand on the Silver Run Trail when we accidentally found ourselves between a cow moose and her calf. Even though there were other places for her to go, she chose to come straight at us. It took nearly two full cans of bear spray before she finally decided we’d made our point.

If you’re hiking around Kodow Kabin, do yourself a favor:
🥾 Carry bear spray.
🫎 Give moose plenty of space.
👶 If you see a calf, assume Mom is nearby and very protective.
↩️ If a moose starts paying attention to you, back away immediately and give it the trail.

Wildlife encounters are one of the best parts of visiting Montana. Respecting wildlife is what helps keep those encounters memorable for the right reasons.

The Story of Vicki’s Bunkhouse- on a special day- 9/13 would have been her 78th birthday.

Every part of Kodow Kabin has a story, but one of the most special is Vicki’s Bunkhouse.

My mom, Vicki, always dreamed of moving to Montana. She used to say that someday she’d come out and live here with us. Since the cabin only has one bedroom, she would laugh and say she’d just sleep out in the shed.

Sadly, she passed away in 2012 before that dream could happen.

My husband Will decided that shed deserved a better purpose. He transformed it into a cozy bunkhouse in her honor.

The very first guest to stay there was my dad.

Now every guest who stays in Vicki’s Bunkhouse becomes part of that story. It’s a small space, but it carries a lot of heart.

Montana was always where she wanted to be.
In a way, she finally made it here.

When people ask if there’s wildlife around Kodow Kabin…

We usually say, “There’s a good chance you’ll see something.”

Sometimes, though, “something” decides to stand right outside the cabin and refuses to let you leave.

This bull moose spent enough time in our yard that we were basically under house arrest. There wasn’t much to do except admire him through the window, take a few photos, and let him finish whatever important moose business was on his schedule.

Around here, the wildlife has the right-of-way. Every. Single. Time.

It’s just another day at Kodow Kabin.

Meet one of the Beartooths’ tiniest residents—the American pika!

These adorable little relatives of rabbits live high in the mountains among cool, rocky slopes and boulder fields. Listen carefully while exploring the Beartooth Highway and nearby trails—you may hear their sharp little “eep!” before you spot one gathering grasses for winter.
