*Rushville City Utilities Meter Upgrade Project*
Rushville City Utilities has been installing newer meters over the past few years, but this large-scale project will complete the full system upgrade in just a few months. Crews from Alldrive will be working in clearly marked vehicles and are trained to provide efficient service with minimal disruption. Installations began today at a small number of properties to ensure the new meters transmit data correctly before crews expand across more areas. The entire project is expected to take three or four months depending on weather and other factors.
--Why upgrade?
Smart meters improve accuracy, reliability, and customer service. These upgraded meters send secure usage information directly to City Utilities. This helps staff identify unusual usage faster and provides residents with a clearer, timelier picture of their water consumption.
--Understanding your bill
Water bills are based only on the amount of water that passes through the meter. The city cannot charge for water that does not flow through the meter. Rushville City Utilities has not had a rate increase since 2016, and any change to water rates must be publicly announced so customers are fully informed.
Once water passes through the meter and enters the property’s plumbing system, it becomes part of the property owner’s responsibility. Sometimes leaks or plumbing issues occur that are not immediately visible and can go unnoticed for several billing cycles. The Utility Board understands this can be stressful and is always willing to work with customers to resolve any concerns. Crews are also happy to offer guidance, when possible, to help identify potential issues on the customer side.
--What this upgrade means for you:
• More accurate monthly readings
• Usage displayed in gallons for easier understanding
• Earlier detection of possible leaks or unusual spikes
• Faster service for customers who move or transfer their accounts
These new meters will help pinpoint more specific times when usage increases, allowing City Utilities to notify property owners much sooner, sometimes even before the next bill arrives. This earlier insight can save residents money and prevent small problems from becoming larger ones.
This investment strengthens the overall reliability of Rushville’s water system and supports continued improvements in service and efficiency. As crews work throughout the community, please use caution when you see marked vehicles and workers near homes.
