“For five years, an old dog waited at the gate with his favorite tennis ball. Then one morning, it was his owner standing there, holding the ball with tears in his eyes.
When a new mailman began his route in 2019, he never expected one small stop would become the most meaningful part of his day.
At that house lived a gentle dog who waited faithfully by the gate every afternoon. At first, the mailman offered him treats to earn his trust. But it didn’t take long before the dog welcomed him as family.
Every day followed the same beautiful ritual.
The mailman would arrive, scratch behind his ears, and hand him a treat. The dog’s eyes would light up as he dashed off to fetch his beloved tennis ball, proudly dropping it at the gate as if saying, ‘Just one more minute with my friend.’
It became more than a routine.
If another mail carrier covered the route, the dog would wait quietly, his tail still, his eyes searching the street for the one person who had become part of his world.

Then, one day, the gate stayed empty.
The mailman slowed his steps, expecting to see the familiar wagging tail. Instead, the dog’s owner walked out, clutching the old, scuffed tennis ball.
With a trembling voice, he explained that his faithful companion had passed away peacefully from old age.
He said there was no one his dog loved seeing more than the mailman.
And before putting the ball away forever, he wanted the man who had brought his dog so much joy to keep it.
The mailman took the worn tennis ball in his hands and broke down in tears.
Because sometimes the smallest friendships leave the deepest emptiness.
