One of Hamline-Midway’s most familiar cafe spaces is about to get a new chapter.

BEWICK is getting ready to open in the former Groundswell space, bringing an all-day neighborhood cafe with breakfast, lunch, baked goods, coffee, soft serve and more.

The concept from chef Nicole Pederson-Bates and Andrew Bates goes well beyond a typical daytime cafe. The menu includes breakfast sandwiches, sambar stew, spicy braised beef, house-made baked goods and a full drink lineup with cocktails, wine, beer and spirit-free options.

Dinner is planned for later on, and the space will also host community gatherings, collaborations and private events.

BEWICK is working with local and regional partners including Dogwood Coffee, Baker’s Field and St. Paul-based Cheeky Harvest.

An official opening date has not yet been announced, but based on the progress we’ve seen, we anticipate BEWICK opening later this month.

[SAINT PAUL, MN] After years of planning around the Hamm’s Brewery site, we’re finally getting a much clearer look at one of its biggest new pieces.

Official plans show East End Apartments, a new-build affordable housing project planned for the eastern side of the historic brewery property. The seven-story building would add over 100 homes on what is currently a surface parking lot, with a design that uses the site’s changing grade to tuck structured parking beneath portions of the project.

The plans also show how this piece connects back to the larger Hamm’s redevelopment, including surface parking intended to support future residents and visitors within the historic brewery buildings.

The height request has already been approved, with site plan approval still ahead.

[SAINT PAUL, MN] Highland Village is starting to look different.

Nearly four years after Lunds & Byerlys relocated next door to Highland Bridge, several of the shopping center’s vacant spaces are being brought back into use.

Crunch Fitness and Foss Swim School will split the former Lunds & Byerlys space, while Chase and a new nail salon are taking over additional storefronts. The center is also receiving exterior updates, including revised facades, signage and a new monument sign along Ford Parkway.

We’ve been tracking the property since 2022, and the latest work marks one of the most substantial changes at Highland Village in years.

Restaurant Aubergine is now open on Cathedral Hill. 🎉🍽️🥂

A French-inspired bistro has landed along Selby Avenue, led by husband-and-wife team Bjorn and Megan Jacobse. After time in kitchens across Montreal, Portland, and the Twin Cities, the duo is bringing that experience back to Cathedral Hill with a concept that leans both refined and approachable.

The menu pulls from classic French technique with a locally driven edge, featuring dishes like pâte en croûte, foie gras torchon, duck with anchoïade, and a côte de bœuf built for sharing. Desserts and drinks carry that same energy, from a tight cocktail list to a curated by-the-glass wine program, adding to the steady momentum along Selby Avenue.

Restaurant Aubergine is located at 525 Selby Avenue and is open Tuesday through Thursday from 4:30 to 10:00 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 4:30 to 11:00 p.m., with the restaurant closed on Sundays and Mondays.

[SAINT PAUL] This block has been sitting quiet for decades… but that might be changing.

There’s a new plan on the table that would bring 300 affordable housing units to a site along Robert Street, just south of downtown. If you’ve driven through here, you know how underutilized it’s been.

What’s interesting is how things are starting to line up. A new affordable housing building was just completed across the street, and a few more projects have come online nearby in recent years.

Put it all together and you start to see the shift. This part of the West Side is picking up, and this feels like the next piece. What used to be more industrial is gradually becoming more residential.
