When you’re standing on land like this, it’s easy to fall in love with the view.
I’m already thinking about the slope
Whether we can create a walkout
How much retaining is needed
And whether we can work that retaining into the foundation
I’m thinking about sunrise and sunset.
How the finished home will actually sit on the lot.
What the view will look like from the living room
I’m thinking about utilities, bedrock, wondering if we have expansive or soft soils, and asking my builder friends in nearby communities what they’ve run into.
I’m looking at architectural guidelines and the things that can quickly add to the cost of the build — like requirements for stone, metal window casings and height restrictions. I’m thinking of the architectural review committees and texting my connections to ask how much time that will add to the build.
I’m thinking about whether the price of the land makes sense in the context of the entire project.
Because a beautiful lot is one thing.
A lot that can actually become the home you’re imagining is something else.
This is one of my favorite parts of the process is seeing the potential before there’s anything there
