Off the coast of San Diego, the Pacific Ocean turned into something out of a dream — a living wave of over 5,000 dolphins moving in perfect rhythm. Captured by marine filmmaker Domenic Biagini earlier this month, the rare “dolphin stampede” shows thousands of common dolphins racing side-by-side, their sleek backs slicing through the surf like synchronized swimmers of the sea.

Scientists call these formations “megapods.” They happen when smaller pods merge, sometimes to chase schools of fish, sometimes to evade predators, and sometimes — as in this case — for reasons we still don’t understand. What’s clear is the coordination: dolphins communicating through clicks and body cues, traveling more than 20 miles per hour in near-perfect sync.

For Biagini, who runs a whale-watching company, it was a moment beyond words. “To be engulfed by thousands of dolphins charging past is surreal,” he told Newsweek. The footage has since gone viral worldwide, leaving even seasoned ocean watchers stunned.

Whether it’s hunting, safety, or social joy, the sight reminds us how little we truly grasp about life just beneath the surface — an entire world that moves as one.
