In collaboration with Yukon to Yellowstone and the Nez Perce Tribe we had an incredible cultural presentation at ˀiwéetem (ee-wat-em), also known as Wallowa Lake showcasing our nimiipuu spirt and connection to place.

“Where the Wood Duck Lives, the World Learns to Hold Gently”

The Wood Duck does not choose the easy places.

While other birds nest safely in reeds or grass,
she climbs
up hollow trees,
old trunks,
places where the wind has carved its scars.
No one tells her this is where she must live.
She chooses it.
Because she knows:
healing often begins in the hardest places.

When her ducklings hatch,
they do not stay long in the cradle of the tree.
On their first sunrise,
she stands below
and calls to them
soft, steady, certain.
And one by one,
they leap.

Tiny bodies,
barely knowing the world,
trusting only her voice.

Native elders say
that this is the first lesson the Wood Duck teaches:

“Even the smallest life can be brave
when someone waits for them below.”

She leads them to water,
but never hurries.
Wood Ducks move with a quiet confidence
their steps small,
their eyes bright,
their hearts light enough
to carry both fear and hope together.

They live in pairs,
returning each year
to the same water,
the same trees,
the same sky.
Not because they must
but because loyalty is woven into their wings.

And at dusk,
when the river softens and darkens,
the Wood Duck drifts in slow circles,
letting the world settle around them.
It is said that they calm the waters
simply by being gentle with it.

That is their way:
bravery without noise,
loyalty without demand,
healing without announcement.

And so the story goes:
where Wood Ducks live,
the world remembers how to hold itself
a little more gently.

For they are the keepers
of quiet courage,
soft landings,
and the small leaps
that change everything.

“The Roar of the Ancestors”

From the heart of the red dawn he rose,
A Spirit Bear, where the river flows.
Painted in blood and sacred flame,
He carried the weight of the warrior’s name.

His roar shook mountains, stirred the ground,
Calling the spirits, fierce and proud.
Not for conquest, nor for fame —
But to guard the land from which he came.

His claws were carved from thunder’s bone,
His breath — the wind, his heart — the stone.
Through battles fought and shadows cast,
He carried the memory of ages past.

When the forest weeps and drums fall still,
His spirit lingers on every hill.
For strength is not the fight alone,
But the courage to protect one’s own.

Now, when the fires of dusk appear,
Listen — his voice is still near.
The Bear reminds all hearts to stand:
Honor the Earth — it’s sacred land.

The Blue Jay Who Carried Laughter
Long ago, when the forest was still young,
the trees spoke in whispers
and the rivers sang in low voices.
The world was heavy with silence.
Then came Blue Jay.
He was small, but his voice was sharp,
bright as flint against stone.
He mocked the solemn owl,
he teased the slow bear,
he shouted at the rising sun:
“Wake! Wake! The day is too short for sleep!”
At first, the other beings grew annoyed.
“Why must you chatter so?” they asked.
But soon they realized—
Blue Jay’s song carried something deeper.
It reminded them not to drown in sorrow,
not to forget the joy of being alive.
Where war had left ashes,
he perched on a branch
and cracked a joke until warriors smiled.
Where grief bent mothers’ shoulders,
he sang sharp notes that cut through the fog,
teaching them that memory can be love,
not only pain.
The elders say Blue Jay
was not made for quiet wisdom like Owl,
nor fierce strength like Eagle.
His gift was different:
to remind us that spirit is light enough to fly
only when it remembers laughter.
So even today,
when you hear his noisy call in the trees,
know that he is not just making mischief.
He is carrying the medicine of joy,
so the forest never grows too heavy to bear.
Ch’itsáq — He Who Keeps the World Awake.

“The Song of the Ocean Spirit”

Beneath the veil of silver mist,
The Spirit Whale began to twist.
Her skin of porcelain, lined with grace,
Held every dream of the water’s face.

She rose from depths where time stands still,
Where ancient songs the oceans fill.
Her voice, a hum the Earth could feel,
A prayer the wind was born to heal.

Each splash—an echo of the past,
Of stories whispered, deep and vast.
She sang of balance, moon, and tide,
Of hearts that flow and worlds that hide.

The elders say her leap of light
Connects the day and folds of night.
Her dance reminds each soul below,
That all we take, we too must sow.

So when the waves in sorrow cry,
And clouds of greed drift through the sky,
The Spirit Whale will rise again—
To cleanse the hearts of mortal men.
