DC people DO NOT play about Marion Barry.

When I moved to the DMV from California, I couldn’t understand it.

Outside of DC, mention Marion Barry and people remember one thing: the drugs, the tape, the arrest.

But ask somebody FROM DC about Marion Barry and you get a completely different story.

Because before that infamous night, Marion Barry was a brilliant chemistry student who pursued graduate studies, became the FIRST national chairman of SNCC, fought for civil rights, created opportunities for Black youth, and eventually became mayor of Washington, DC.

And when he got power, he moved MONEY.

Black and minority contracting went from less than 5% of DC government contracts to roughly 40%.

He created opportunities for Black businesses.

He put young people to work.

He helped build an economic ecosystem whose impact can still be felt in Washington today.

Was Marion Barry flawed? Absolutely.

But here’s what living in the DMV taught me:

America remembers the tape.
DC remembers the receipts.

And maybe that’s the bigger lesson.

Economic power isn’t just about how much money we make.

It’s about where that money goes after we make it.

Together they run two of the biggest cities Republicans love to call lawless.

The numbers say otherwise.

In New York, overall crime dropped 5.8% in the first half of 2026 compared to last year. Murders fell 24.7%. It's the safest start to any year in the city's recorded history, according to the NYPD.

In Baltimore, homicides fell 23.1% over the same period, down to 50 through the first six months of the year. That's the fewest homicides Baltimore has recorded in the first half of a year since at least the 1960s. Carjackings are down 43%. Burglaries are down 16%. Robberies are down 13%.

These aren't cherry-picked stats from press releases nobody checks. This is CompStat data, the same system Republicans point to when they want to claim a city is failing.

For years the story about cities like New York and Baltimore has been the same: they're dangerous, they're broken, they need to be "taken over" or flooded with federal troops to be saved. Trump has said as much about both.

Meanwhile, two young mayors focused on actual public safety strategy, not headlines, are quietly producing the safest years either city has seen in decades.

Zohran Mamdani is 34. Brandon Scott is 42.

Nobody's pretending the work is done. Both mayors have said as much themselves. But the direction is clear, and it's the opposite of what you've been told to expect from cities run by Democrats.

You are not asking for too much.

If you’re making one of the biggest financial decisions of your life, you deserve answers.

You deserve phone calls returned.
You deserve your documents explained.
You deserve someone who takes the time to make sure you understand what you’re signing.

Too many people are intimidated into staying quiet because they don’t want to seem difficult.

Don’t.

Whether it’s your loan officer, real estate agent, financial advisor, contractor, or anyone else you’re paying to represent you, remember this:

They work for YOU.

If they make you feel like you’re a nuisance for asking questions, it’s time to find someone who values your business.

Your money deserves respect.
Your time deserves respect.
And YOU deserve respect.

Adding your child to your deed is the fastest way to lose the house!

Adding your child to your deed feels like protection. It’s actually exposure.

If they get sued, divorced, or fall behind on debt, your house can get pulled into it. Not your problem. Theirs. But now it’s yours too.

A living trust does what a deed addition can’t: keeps the house protected and out of probate, without opening it up to somebody else’s mess.

That’s the reason why we need to practice collective economics. We need to buy real estate. We need to own businesses.

There are 4 things everyone needs to know after the loss of a loved one. The worst time to figure this out is in the middle of grief.

1. Contact the mortgage company immediately.
If mortgage payments have been missed because of a death in the family, don’t ignore the lender. Ask for the Loss Mitigation Department. They may be able to offer a forbearance, loan modification, or payment deferment to help you avoid foreclosure.

2. Search for life insurance.
Many families have no idea a policy exists. Go to NAIC.org and search “Life Insurance Policy Locator.” It could uncover benefits your family didn’t even know were there.

3. Get a living trust.
If you don’t have one, make this a priority. A living trust can protect your family, help avoid probate, and make an incredibly difficult time much easier for the people you love.

4. Make sure you have life insurance.
Don’t leave your family trying to pay the mortgage while grieving your loss. Have enough coverage to protect the people you love.

None of us know when our time will come.

But we can make sure our families aren’t left with confusion, court battles, and financial hardship.
