Backyard homes in LA County are turning into a powerful tool for adding new housing options. 🏡
Over 10,200 accessory dwelling units, think backyard homes and garage conversions, were built in the county last year, making up 37% of all new homes approved for occupancy. That’s more than six times the number built in 2018. For many homeowners, these small spaces mean extra flexibility, whether it’s space for family, rental income, or a path to maximize property value. 📈
But even as ADUs reach record numbers, overall housing production has dipped, reminding us that backyard units alone can’t solve the long-term shortage. The market is evolving, and knowing how to navigate these changes is key for buyers and sellers looking to make smart moves.
Would you consider adding a backyard home, or do you see them as a sign of bigger shifts in LA County’s real estate? Let me know your thoughts below!
