🐢 A Record-Breaking Turtle Season on Sanibel 🐢

Sanibel has reached 922 loggerhead nests this season — a new island record. That tops the previous record of 878 nests set in 2023.

It’s an incredible number, but nesting is only part of the story. SCCF continues to monitor the nests as they hatch, wash out, or face predators, and the final hatchling count will tell us much more about how successful the season really was.

For now, 922 nests is a pretty remarkable reminder of just how important Sanibel’s beaches are to sea turtles.

The sea turtles are part of the story.

So are the shorebirds, conservation lands, shell-filled beaches, and stretches of shoreline that still feel connected to the natural world.

Many of the things people love most about Sanibel exist because generations of residents, researchers, volunteers, and conservation organizations chose to protect them.

Sanibel's character wasn't created by accident. It was shaped by decades of stewardship.

That's one reason Sanibel feels different—and why so many people return year after year.

🐢 Why Are Sea Turtles Endangered? 🐢

Sea turtles have survived for more than 100 million years, but many of the challenges they face today are manmade.

Coastal development, artificial lighting, pollution, fishing gear entanglement, boat strikes, and habitat loss have reduced sea turtle populations around the world and led to legal protections for all sea turtle species found in Florida.

On Sanibel, many of the beach practices visitors encounter—from protected nests to turtle-friendly lighting—exist because these animals still need our help.

The good news is that conservation works. Protected nests, responsible beach practices, and decades of research have helped improve survival rates and given future generations of sea turtles a better chance.
