The sun comes up, the sand starts to warm, and the railroad vine — also called beach morning glory — is already wide awake.

These pink flowers may look delicate, but this native dune plant is doing real work: anchoring in the sand, spreading low, and holding the dunes in place.

Cottage Highlight | Living Room

What started as a stripped-down blank slate became something warm, open, and welcoming.

Today, this space is the heart of Mollymawk Cottage: soft coastal colors, sunlight pouring through the windows, room to gather, relax, and settle into island time.

What a difference a little vision (and a lot of work!) can make.

Apparently, the pool deck is not just for people.

We found this Yellow-Crowned Night Heron keeping watch by the water — calm, patient, and looking very much like he had a reservation.

Between this poolside guest and the birds building a nest under the house, Mollymawk Cottage has had plenty of reminders lately that on Sanibel, nature does not stay politely in the background.

Sometimes it takes the best seat.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands are #26 in The New York Times’ 52 Places to Go in 2026.

Old-fashioned charm endures. It’s what welcomes returning visitors back, year after year.

That’s why generations return.

2026 monthly stays are still available.
Peak season 2027 is already filling.

Some morning beach walks come with a little surprise.

On this one, we came across the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation documenting what’s called a false crawl — when a sea turtle comes ashore but returns to the water without nesting.

Not every set of tracks leads to a nest, but every set tells part of the story.

Thank you SCCF for watching, recording, and helping protect Sanibel’s sea turtle story.

Some island moments require sunscreen.

Others require a spoon.

The Shack of Sanibel is an easy stop when the Florida sun starts winning — frozen custard, a shady table, and a few quiet minutes to cool off between beach walks and bike rides.

🐢The first tagged loggerhead of Sanibel’s 2026 nesting season now has a name: Lila.

Through the sea turtle program at , researchers are tracking her movements to better understand nesting behavior, migration patterns, and the health of Southwest Florida’s coastal ecosystems.

There’s something remarkable about watching a loggerhead leave our island beaches, disappear into the Gulf, and then quietly reappear later as a small moving point on a tracking map somewhere far from shore. It’s a reminder that Sanibel is part of something much larger — and much more connected — than a simple beach vacation.

And in many ways, this is why Sanibel feels different from so many coastal places. The protected shorelines, dark beaches, wildlife, shells, birds, and slower rhythm of the island did not happen by accident. They exist because organizations like have spent decades doing the long, steady work of conservation and stewardship.

That matters to us at Mollymawk Cottage. Supporting SCCF in a small way is part of helping protect the island experience our guests come here to enjoy!
