Cold weather is back this week, and we’re already seeing it show up in higher electric use. Many of the calls we receive this time of year end up being tied to heating systems running in a mode the homeowner didn’t even realize was on.

When temperatures drop, heat pumps sometimes need extra help to keep your home warm. That’s when the system brings on its backup heat, often shown on your thermostat as “AUX” or “EM HEAT.” This backup heat works fast, but it also uses a lot more electricity — sometimes double or even triple what your system normally uses — which can lead to a noticeable jump in your bill.

If you see AUX or Emergency Heat running, try keeping your thermostat around 68 degrees and avoid making big temperature jumps. Raising it several degrees at a time forces the system to rely more on that high-energy backup heat. Using ceiling fans to push warm air down, changing air filters regularly, and sealing up drafts around windows and doors can also help your system work more efficiently. A little prep now can go a long way in keeping your home comfortable and your winter bill under control. ❄️
