Home Security Tip #1 – Research the Community Before You Buy

Before becoming a Florida Realtor, I spent more than 35 years in law enforcement, federal security, private investigations, and security management. Let's just say I've spent a good part of my life looking at things most people hope they never have to think about!

Because of that experience, I've decided to share these home security tips to help buyers make informed decisions before purchasing what is often the biggest investment of their lives.

Today's Tip: Research the Community

It's easy to fall in love with a beautiful home. Granite countertops and a sparkling pool can be pretty convincing. But remember—you can remodel a kitchen. It's a lot harder to remodel a neighborhood.

When you've narrowed your search to a few communities, take a little time to do some homework.

🏡 Contact the local police department and school district to learn about the community and available services.

📰 Read local news to get a feel for the area. Are there community events, youth programs, and positive neighborhood activities? Are there recurring public safety concerns?

🚗 Visit the neighborhood at different times of the day and week. Pay attention to traffic, lighting, noise levels, property maintenance, and the overall atmosphere.

👥 If you have the opportunity, talk with a few neighbors. They often know more about a community than any website ever will.

Remember, you're not just buying a house—you're choosing where you'll build memories, celebrate holidays, and maybe even argue over whose turn it is to mow the lawn.
