The Wedding Cake House in Kennebunk, Maine, is one of New England’s most unique and photographed homes. Built in 1825 by master shipbuilder George W. Bourne, it features elaborate Gothic-style trim that makes it look like a giant frosted cake. According to local legend, Bourne constructed the ornate woodwork by hand as a romantic apology to his wife after leaving for sea soon after their wedding. The couple lived in the home together, and it stayed in the Bourne family for three generations. Though privately owned, the house is sometimes opened to the public for charity events and continues to be a must-see roadside stop for curious travelers.
