Nobody tells you this when you’re house hunting… 🌲
If you want a low-maintenance yard, pine trees are a hard no.
I have a serious love/hate relationship with the ones in my own yard. I LOVE the shade and the sound they make with a breeze. I don’t love the constant mess of pine needles and pinecones.
Here’s why pine trees matter more than you think:
• Pine needles fall year-round, not just in one season
• They’re acidic, so growing grass or plants underneath is tough
• Needles clog gutters, drains, and landscaping fast
• Trimming and removal is expensive (and usually not DIY-friendly)
A few other things to look for if low maintenance is the goal:
• Smaller lot = less mowing, watering, and cleanup
• Minimal landscaping beds (rocks + edging > high-maintenance plants)
• Younger trees instead of mature ones with heavy leaf drop
• Flat yards — slopes mean more erosion, watering issues, and work
• Sprinkler systems with simple zones (more zones = more things to break)
I love the charm of mature trees…
But helps to know what you’re signing up for.
