In 2014 I traveled to Norway few days after the summer solstice.
It was my first time that far north...
One of the days we were there, my friends and I had a picnic next to this amazingly picturesque lake.
We settled down with our picnic baskets, enjoying the serene beauty around us.
It was a bright, cool day.
I had flown up from Dubai, so I was not about to take off my jacket and go swimming...
but one of the Norwegians we were with DID go swimming as I laughed (in my mind) at how bizarre this seemed to me...
For 4 hours, we ate, talked, and laughed, listened to music, danced... but something felt off.
Time wasn't passing...
The sun didnโt seem to move at all.
AT ALL!
I struggled with the concept of what time of day it was.
My brain was struggling to comprehend this new reality where time felt like it stood still.
We eventually packed up and went back to the hotel.
On the way back, I made my friend take pics of me...
This is a pic of me being amazed at the sun still shining brightly at 9:55 PM!!!
The phenomenon of the midnight sun was something I had read about but never experienced.
=================================
This taught me a profound lesson about perception and adaptability.
Just like my brain had to adjust to the perpetual daylight...
in business, we often encounter situations that challenge our usual way of thinking.
Itโs crucial to stay adaptable yet attentive to what's happening
Also, realize that not every situation can be guided by how we feel or the reality we perceive, but navigate by what we know to be true...
Just as I closed the darkening curtains to go to bed at sunset at 11:30pm, in the perpetual setting sun in Norway...
You too can learn to thrive in unfamiliar business environments.
Have you seen this perpetual light? How far north have you been?
When have you faced a situation that challenged your usual way of thinking?
๐Share your experiences and how you adapted. ๐
