💳 Sunday Credit Tip: A Small Score Drop Can Be Normal
Did your credit score dip after you opened a new account? Don't panic. Applying for new credit can result in a hard inquiry, and opening the account can also lower the average age of your credit history. Both can temporarily affect your score. There isn't a universal number of points your score should drop. Every credit profile is different, so one person may see very little movement while another sees a more noticeable change. What really matters most is what happens next. Make your payments on time, keep revolving balances manageable, and give the new account time to become part of an established credit history.
One important exception is when you're preparing to buy a home. Talk with your loan officer before opening any new credit so a temporary change doesn't create an unnecessary problem with your mortgage. 🏡
