Today marks the 126th anniversary of our nation’s deadliest natural disaster.

The 120 mph hurricane that struck Galveston Island on September 8th, 1900, claimed between 8,000 and 12,000 lives and caused upwards of $30 million (in 1900s dollars, $1.15B today) in property damage across the city.

Galveston played a pivotal role in the history of Texas. From Cabeza de Vaca’s encounters with the Karankawa Indians in the early-16th century to Stephen F. Austin recognizing the harbor upon petitioning to the Mexican government in 1825. Galveston was the temporary capital of the Republic in April of 1836.

Anybody else sick of all this data center talk??

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we have no issue with economic development in the Lone Star State much less the Texas Triangle, so why are we bending over backwards for these data centers?

They’re here to stay (unfortunately) so we better educate ourselves and not keep letting these guys take prime land and and a tax abatement to boot.

Things are changing, and I’m not sure where to go.

My original caretakers are beneath my surface, and the new owners don’t have much time for me anymore.

I don’t blame them, they’re busy traveling and seeing new lands. But I wish they spent a little more time keeping me up.

I need a trim and could use a new fence, and don’t get me started on these damn hogs.

My faded for sale sign out front is small, faded, and leaned over, but the realtor looks nice enough. I think they are second cousins of the owners’ brother-in-law or something like that.

There’s a lot of growth happening around me and a lot of my friends are getting new owners. I’d love to keep things how they used to be but times change.

Would love if someone ran cattle or farmed me like back in the day. Hell, if it came down to it, I’d even take a new owner who built homes for folks just starting a family.

I just hope I’m not forgotten as everyone else keeps moving on.

In the shadow of one of Houston’s biggest freeways lies this family cemetery...

Carl Wunsche was a German immigrant who landed in Spring around 1840.

The family become extremely successful and wealthy as the area became known for its sawmills and sugar cane.

The family was so influential that the I-45 plan was slightly rerouted to make way for their headstones a century later.

This particular segment of I-45 was one of the last sections of I-45 built in Texas, and wasn’t fully opened until the last person, Juliane Wunsche was laid to rest in 1959.
