Good information

Good information

Ohio taxpayers deserve both honesty and perspective when it comes to property tax reform.

House Bill 479 is now headed to Governor DeWine’s desk and includes approximately $350 million in one-time property tax relief for Ohioans who currently qualify for the Homestead Exemption. For many seniors and disabled homeowners living on fixed incomes, this could provide meaningful relief on a future tax bill.

That is good news.

Any effort that helps Ohioans remain in the homes they spent a lifetime paying for deserves recognition.

At the same time, taxpayers deserve the complete picture.

This bill is not broad property tax reform.

It is not a permanent solution.

It does not help every homeowner who has experienced significant increases in property taxes over the last several years.

And it does not address every structural issue that has contributed to rising tax burdens across Ohio.

However, I believe it is important to recognize something else.

Ohio has made more progress on property tax reform in the last two years than it had in decades.

Recent legislation has addressed portions of the 20-mill floor issue, limited certain forms of automatic tax growth, increased homeowner tax credits, expanded review of levy collections, and now provides additional targeted relief to qualifying seniors and disabled homeowners.

These reforms did not happen by accident.

They happened because taxpayers across Ohio spoke up.

Citizens attended meetings.

They contacted legislators.

They asked difficult questions.

They shared their stories.

They demanded that state leaders take a serious look at a property tax system that many homeowners felt was becoming increasingly difficult to afford.

While reasonable people may disagree on the best solution, I believe informed and respectful citizen involvement has been the driving force behind the progress we have seen.

I do not support eliminating property taxes altogether. Schools, public safety, local government services, and other essential functions require funding.

But I do support taxpayers who have insisted that the system can and should work better.

The grassroots pressure from homeowners across Ohio helped elevate property tax reform from a local concern to one of the most discussed issues in state government.

That is exactly how representative government is supposed to work.

As County Auditor, I have sat across the table from seniors worried about staying in their homes, young families struggling with rising costs, and taxpayers who simply wanted to understand why their bill increased. Regardless of political affiliation, I can tell you the concerns are real. That is why these reforms matter and why the conversation must continue.

So while I appreciate the progress represented by House Bill 479 and other recent reforms, I also believe more work remains.

A one-time credit is relief.

It is not comprehensive reform.

A temporary reduction helps.

It does not solve every long-term challenge facing Ohio homeowners.

If you believe more improvements are needed, stay engaged.

Continue respectfully sharing your experiences with your elected officials. Let them know what is working. Let them know what still needs improvement.

The progress we’ve seen is proof that citizen involvement matters.

The work that remains is proof that citizen involvement is still needed.

They should continue to be part of where it goes next.
