My wife and I headed to the beach for a little time away. Just a quiet day, some sunshine, and a chance to relax.

Good land management doesn’t always have to be complicated or expensive.

Tall Timbers recently shared some great information on winter disking and the role it can play in improving wildlife habitat. Their research shows that disking from October through January can encourage beneficial native forbs such as ragweed and partridge pea while also increasing insect diversity—both important food sources for bobwhite quail and wild turkey.

The benefits go beyond quail. These early-successional areas can provide food and cover for deer, rabbits, songbirds and other wildlife while creating more diversity across a property.

One of the things I enjoy most about land is seeing how thoughtful management can improve a property over time. Whether it’s prescribed fire, timber management, food plots, native vegetation or something as simple as strategic winter disking, the decisions we make today can have a tremendous impact on the wildlife and the land for years to come.
