Lightning Safety
There is no safe place outside when thunderstorms are in the area. If you hear thunder, you are likely within striking distance of the storm. Just remember, When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors.
1. Seek shelter: Go indoors or into a hard-topped vehicle at the first rumble of thunder.
2. Stay inside: Avoid contact with anything that conducts electricity like plumbing, electrical equipment, and appliances.
3. Stay away from windows and doors: These can provide a path for lightning to travel indoors.
4. Avoid water: Stay out of pools, lakes, and showers during a thunderstorm.
5. Don't touch metal: This includes anything from metal fences to wires, and even metal frames of windows and doors.
6. Spread out if outside: If you are with a group, spread out to minimize the risk if lightning strikes.
7. Avoid tall, isolated objects: Don't take shelter under a tall, isolated tree.
8. If caught outside: If you can't reach shelter, crouch down low to the ground with your feet together and your head tucked between your knees.
9. Wait 30 minutes: Stay inside or in your safe shelter for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.
10. Unplug electronics: Turn off and unplug electronic devices, including computers, TVs, and game consoles, to prevent damage from power surges.
