Sometimes...
we wander upstairs -
- not because we are curious and merely want to climb, but rather - because we know that staying where we are is limiting.

(This pic was taken for us by from a space formerly known as the second-floor bathroom.)

So ...
We asked ourselves:

What if we were to ...

- remove the chimney?
- drop the wall between the parlor and dining rooms
- reroute the access to the lower level

Standing here in the original kitchen, it’s hard to imagine not having invested (insert old school cash register sound here) in the removal of the massive abandoned chimney.

Now, ... about that delicious “cook’s kitchen” we’ve been dreaming about for !!!

Early on - to achieve our desired floor plan for modern living, we knew the original, long abandoned, coal-burning chimney needed to be removed. The work itself is grueling and much like an episode of “Dirty Jobs.” Temporary walls were built on each level of the house to support the floor system, which was tied into the masonry.

We love this pic!
- No, we are not putting an elevator in the house!

Whether this was said by Sir Macintosh or someone else, we are smelling her soul and attentively listening

- “You’ll Always Be My Favorite What If!”

- Have you ever asked yourself “What if we buy this quite pitiful yet charming 105-year old house, update her for modern living, and restore it to her former glory?

Maybe not, but sure is fun to watch!

In addition to this precious cottage’s enormous potential for curb appeal, she has a wonderful, surprisingly flat backyard uncharacteristic in the area. Under a heap of landscape mess that required removing several large dead trees lying across the back yard, we discovered a very old DIY clothesline (after removal, it appeared the hardware store must’ve had a sale on Quikcrete when it was set.) There was an old metal shed that one of our subs was thrilled to acquire, to which we were tickled to say goodbye. Before the shed’s relo, inside, we found a lawnmower that needed a smidge of TLC before we could use it onsite, few tools that were worthy of donation, and half a dozen items that were “yard sale rejects” we had to toss in the dumpster.

Speaking of ... sitting on a far-from-entertainment-ready patio, you can see one of 30 dumpsters (yes! - we counted) that were required for this eleven-month renovation

It would will be completely understandable if you do not recognize the progress between the pictures of the basement, as we found it, on the left, and our second photo shoot, of progress pictures on the right.

However, ... please keep both your neutral and negative comments to yourself. Anything less than complementary will be hard for those of us to stomach. We have loved, adored, and embraced her long before she was a “curbside beauty.”

We saw the crazy potential

Early summer in the mountains of western North Carolina is most delightful unless you are cleaning out the attic We weren’t banking on finding a hidden treasure, fine antique, or a gem in the attic but were thrilled with the absence of nests, critter droppings, feathers or the skin of a Mr. No-Shoulders. Did you know cobwebs cling on and stick to sweaty skin?Eww!
Eww!
EWW!

We had quite a few “head-scratchers,” as we were getting to know this ole house and sinking our teeth into the massive renovation project. We continued to be both enchanted by her charm and by what, to others, seemed to be a house in a complete state of disrepair. It wasn’t the basement full of decades of junk or the massive abanded coal-burning chimney pillaring through the middle of the structure that was daunting. It was The “Pink Room” that was only accessible by way of the “Purple Room” that kept us playing games of “what-if, ” drawing and erasing and drawing again, and, as we say around here, “head- scratching.”

Can we,
Should we,
Can we,
Will we give up a valued bedroom, add a staircase to the precious attic space or create a masterful suite?

was quite loud during the day. The hustle and bustle of the crew was most impressive. Demolition of 105-year-old plaster ceilings and walls is exhausting, filthy, and loud work. At the end of each day, our crew swept their way out the door, “letting her be” such that even the house might have a night’s rest.
