Everyone knows Orlando and Miami. But some of Florida’s most interesting stories are hidden in towns most travelers have never heard of.
Five of them sit within 30 minutes of our dock on the Indian River Lagoon 👇
Grant-Valkaria — Historic Grant Station opened around 1893 and later became Jorgensen’s General Store: shop, post office, telegraph and trading post for a village that lived off the lagoon. This is where Sunrise on the River sits.
Malabar — Malabar Scrub Sanctuary protects 577 acres of trails, wetlands and pine flatwoods, with Florida scrub-jays and gopher tortoises. About 12 minutes north.
Micco — no downtown, no traffic lights. Old fish camps, small marinas and mangrove shoreline. About 8 minutes south.
Fellsmere — in 1915 Zena M. Dreier voted here: the first woman to vote in a Florida municipal election, and the first anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line. About 30 minutes southwest.
Melbourne Village — a 1940s homesteading experiment of shared land and self-built houses, about 680 residents today and 52 acres of community parks. About 25 minutes north.
Florida’s most memorable places are not always found in travel guides. Sometimes they are hidden along two-lane roads, beside quiet waterways and inside communities that still move at their own pace.
