What a fun night…It’s not everyday we get to dress up in our “roaring 20’s” cocktail dresses and go share about the impact we are making in the community. New Futures was so honored to get to speak at the Toasting with Tallulah event that raises funds for the Women’s Philanthropy Society Grant.

As one of last year’s grant winners, we were able to hire additional staff that gave us the capacity to triple the size of our transitional housing program in the last nine months, offering homes to families who had previously been living in hotels or otherwise homeless. Guests at the event got to hear about one of the unique features of the program, using a Housing Navigator with lived experience. Carla Pierre, our Housing Navigator, shared her personal story of how lived experience made homeless to homeowner a reality for her family.

We are grateful for the opportunity this grant gave us to grow. We hope the work we are doing has proven the value of this program in our community and that more people will join in supporting us in the future. We believe there are more “Carla’s” out there just waiting for someone to walk along side them.

If you would like to learn more about our programs or offer much needed support please feel free to reach out to us! Inquiries can be made by phone to 256-929-3215 or emailed to [email protected] while donations can be made through the website at www.newfuturesinc.com or mailed to New Futures at 3419 Venona Ave. NW, Huntsville, AL 35810

We encourage everyone to take a moment today to thank your favorite nonprofits. We are blessed in our community to have wonderful partner agencies who support the work we do. New Futures focuses on providing shelter and the case management needed to advocate for and get folks connected to the other resources. Thanks to all who support our efforts!

Summer is still going strong, but so many are heading back to school. I know our shelter sure is much quieter this morning 🤔… It has given us a moment to take inventory of some current needs we have and one of our biggest needs right now is dishes!

If you find yourself looking to change out kitchenware or just willing to invest in a set of dishes for us, we could really use items to help us ensure all families have plates, bowls, cups, silverware to use (matching is not necessary 😉). Just like the linens and towels, we issue these items to families so they can take them with them when they leave to their new homes.

We know that starting over is never easy, but if your new future begins when you enter shelter, it will help make your transition easier in the end.

You can drop off (or ship) donations to New Futures at 3419 Venona Ave NW, Huntsville, AL 35810.

We are onsite to assist with unloading or offer tax donation receipts Monday through Thursday from 9am to 5pm but you can literally drop off with no contact at our front door 24 hours a day under video recorded security.

Thank you for supporting New Futures!

Everything is growing and changing in our community and that can be a beautiful thing (look at the difference in just a few months). We are getting to watch the development each day of what will be New Stone Commons. A 42-unit apartment complex, located directly across from our shelter on Venona Ave., that will provide a changed landscape in affordable housing for our community thanks to the support of Neighborhood Concepts, Inc.

Just as housing is built one step at a time, recovery from life’s trauma often requires that same approach. If someone has a situation that brings them to homelessness, they aren’t going to buy a home the next week, but with time we have seen it happen! So each step of this build is meaningful because we see it as opportunities. As a community we are developing pathways that help people walk out of homelessness- from the streets, to shelter, to transitional housing, to permanent housing, all of these stops may be necessary for some to find stability.

We look forward to continuing to update you about this project along the way. If you are interested in learning more about New Futures and how you can help support our efforts to build a pathway out of homelessness for those in the community, reach out to us by email at [email protected] or by phone at (256)929-3215

We speak with families each week moving here, looking for a place to stay until they get on their feet, because of how “affordable” it is here compared to where they are coming from. What they don’t take into account is the pay here. Things are only affordable if you have the right job, which for many is not going to happen. The new annual report, Out of Reach: The High Cost of Housing has just been released and you can view numbers for across the country through the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Do you make enough? You may be surprised how many of us won’t….

So many people are coming to our community because it’s such a great place to live. There is no doubt, Huntsville is growing. That also means that we are increasingly seeing more people who need a place to stay. So I wanted to briefly explain the process behind each of our programs so we can help get those in need “moving in”.

Our emergency shelter offers private rooms to families in crisis so all family compositions can stay together. We are a small shelter though, so we do not have walk-in availability, we must work from a waiting list. If you are homeless with children, and need to come into shelter, to get onto our list to be considered for availability you will need to complete the coordinated entry process. This is a simple phone call evaluation that can be done over the phone by contacting Family Services Center at 256-551-1610 ext 223. Once you complete this process, you would be eligible to be considered for our program, as we pull in based on priority from the list created through this process. It is not an immediate solution, but it is the first step. If you or a family you wish to refer needs help, this is always a good place to start.

If you are interested in transitional housing with us, because currently you are working and able to afford fair market value, but you just need help with second chance housing due to an eviction, poor credit, insufficient income (not 3x rent), or criminal history we can schedule you for an appointment. New Futures is currently partnering with landlords to offer a program that can provide houses and apartments at weekly cost shares similar to what families are paying for hotel rooms. This opportunity allows families time to utilize case management and other wraparound services to resolve barriers to traditional housing so they can move toward that goal. To schedule your appointment to complete the application and financial assessment for transitional housing contact us during business hours (M-Th from 9-5) at 256-929-3215. We do have some transitional housing units available, and ready to move into!

We are available to answer your questions during hours- Monday through Thursday from 9am to 5pm. Our goal is to be responsive to whatever access you may have, as we know not everyone will have a phone.
