If you’ve ever wondered what progress looks like, this is certainly a picture of it for us. So many families we work with end up homeless after a situation (illness, job loss, domestic violence, etc.) that results in eviction. In those cases that eviction can become prohibitive in gaining housing again- leaving them stuck in shelter or at best couch surfing or living out of motels. This affordable housing construction directly across from our shelter will allow even those who need second chances to move beyond their current barriers to find placement. These 42 units will make a huge impact in ensuring families with children have access to housing and supportive services to stay on track. Thank you to everyone making this possible for our community!

We are excited to partner with Neighborhood Concepts, Inc. once again on an impactful new project for our community!

Over the next year, our team will be working hard to build 42 affordable apartment units on Venona Ave in North Huntsville.

Please excuse our progress as we get to work—we are aiming to position Neighborhood Concepts to welcome families home by the end of the first quarter of 2027!

Mental health issues and homelessness are often closely associated with one another, and understandably so. However, it’s often a question of the chicken and the egg… which came first- that can be of great debate. The depression and anxiety that can be created through homelessness can be overwhelming, and the support to get back into housing can stabilize both. Just as we treat mental health and substance use as co-occurring disorders, it would benefit us to do the same with homelessness, and not just assume it’s a symptom.

We have seen multiple families come in and go out. One family recently came into shelter, and was able to find stable housing in only 27 days. Sometimes just having a place to be for a few weeks, so you aren’t paying for a hotel room can allow families to get their finances in order to get into permanent housing after a bump in the road.
Being homeless is certainly not being helpless. Our families are doing the work to find stability. That’s why we want to help set them up for success when they come into a room at New Futures.
Each time a family comes in and goes out, we are resetting rooms. Sheets, pillows, blankets, towels, and washcloths are staples we constantly need to make this work. New or gently used items are always gratefully accepted.
Our most urgent need at this time is towels and washcloths. Our closet is empty and we are in need of help to restock. If you or anyone you know may have items that could help us out, they can drop off at the shelter (3419 Venona Ave NW, Huntsville, AL 35810) anytime.
