Fall in Full Swing: Denver’s Best Autumn Hikes & Hidden Foliage Spots
There’s a short, golden window in Colorado when the air turns crisp, sweaters come out, and the foothills glow like they’ve been set on fire. You don’t have to drive to Aspen or Crested Butte to chase it — Denver and the nearby Front Range are overflowing with color right now.
Here’s your insider’s guide to the best local hikes and hidden foliage spots — plus where to grab a pint or patio beer when the boots come off.
1. Red Rocks Park & Trading Post Trail (Morrison)
Just 25 minutes from downtown, Red Rocks in autumn is unreal. The sandstone cliffs glow deep orange under the aspen yellows, and the 1.4-mile Trading Post loop gives you everything — views, wildlife, and that cinematic Colorado feel.
Pro tip: Go early (before 9 a.m.) for empty trails and perfect light.
Après stop: Walk down to Red Rocks Beer Garden or Morrison Inn for rooftop margaritas and live music.
2. Lookout Mountain Loop (Golden)
Golden’s crown jewel. The loop from Windy Saddle offers sweeping views of Denver below and groves of aspen hugging the switchbacks. The mix of evergreens and gold is picture-perfect from late September through mid-October.
Pro tip: Hit Buffalo Bill’s Grave overlook for that classic panoramic shot.
Après stop: New Terrain Brewery — large patio, big community feel. Grab a pint and sit outside to watch all the bikers come down!
3. Lair o’ the Bear Park (Evergreen)
A family-friendly favorite with serious color payoff. The trail meanders along Bear Creek with aspens, cottonwoods, and willows creating a golden tunnel. Ideal for easy strolls or short weekend escapes.
Pro tip: Bring your dog (it’s leashed-friendly) and pack a thermos of cider.
Après stop: Evergreen Brewery — cozy upstairs taproom with mountain views and a rotating fall ale lineup.
4. City Surprises: Denver’s Hidden Fall Color Pockets
You don’t need to leave the city to catch autumn magic. Denver’s parks come alive this time of year —
City Park: Maple canopies over the lake with the skyline glowing behind.
Cheesman Park: Ginkgo trees and soft gold lawns perfect for a picnic.
Washington Park: The south loop is pure Instagram gold mid-October.
Après stop:
Joyride Brewing (Edgewater) — watch the sunset over Sloan’s Lake.
When to Go
Peak colors hit Denver and the foothills between October 8–18 most years. Higher elevations fade first, so the city actually hits its stride later — just in time for your weekend plans.
