From the Vega Cafe to the Bunk House 🤠☕
Long before the Bunk House called this place home, this building was a beloved part of Vega’s Route 66 story, the Vega Cafe, run by the one and only Ollie Lee O’Connor.
For years, Ollie Lee welcomed cowboys, local families, highway travelers, seasonal workers, and hungry high school football players through her doors. She was known for serving good, hearty food and making folks feel at home.
And if you’ve heard stories about the famous Ollie Lee chocolate cake, those stories are true. Her baking became legendary around Vega, and her chocolate cake remains a treasured part of the town’s Route 66 memories.
One of the most memorable photographs from Vega’s past shows a group of Panhandle cowboys gathered outside the cafe, sitting beneath the old “Vega Cafe” sign. It captures something special about the place not just a restaurant, but a gathering spot and a piece of everyday Texas life along Route 66.
Today, the building has a new chapter as the Bunk House, but we’re proud to be part of a place with so much history.
So when you walk through these doors, you’re not just visiting the Bunk House you’re stepping into a little piece of Vega and Route 66 history.
